Although the word Surreal is easily and understandably connoted with the Surrealism Movement of the third and fourth decades of the previous century; my application of the word is better emphasized as fantastic!
Born in Romania in 1987, E. Movileanu was apprenticed at the N N Tonitza Fine art school under Didu Clapon and Dionisie Gradu, where she demonstrated great talent and perseverance in her work. She travelled widely from 2005 to 2010, participating and winning the first prize multiple times in several National and International art contests, including the National Olympiad of Fine Arts where she placed 3rd. Attending the National Academy of Fine arts in Bucharest, E. Movileanu has made advances at being able to portray the human body realistically, where she studied a wide range of topics, including anatomy, sculpture and art history. Elena has studied and mastered various painting techniques such as fresco painting, a method of painting water-based pigments on freshly applied plaster, impasto and lead.
Elena currently resides in Saskatoon with her partner Richard and their son, where she gets her inspiration from local architectural and landscape sources.
